After successfully decoding the map on the stone tablet in the previous episode, the team of treasure hunters led by John Casey and Peter Struzzieri are back on their hunt for the lost gold of World War II. In episode 5, titled "The Backdoor," their search takes them to a new location deep in the Philippine jungle.

The team heads to a cave signaled on the map, known as the "backdoor," which is believed to be a crucial entrance to where the Yamashita's gold is hidden. The cave is only accessible by swimming through a river that flows into it. The treasure hunters have to use scuba gear to dive through the underwater passage to reach the cave. The team members face a daunting journey, but their excitement and the hope of finding the treasure are high.

However, getting in the cave turns out to be the easy part. The inside of the cave is pitch black, and the team must rely on their flashlights to navigate through the winding caverns. As they move deeper into the cave, they discover a series of natural traps that could potentially lead them to their deaths. One such trap is a narrow passageway with sharp rocks on either side. The team has to maneuver through the gap with utmost caution, trying to avoid the rocks that could rip through their diving gear.

After navigating the first set of traps, the team comes across a blocked-off tunnel that seems to be man-made. They believe that this tunnel could lead to the gold. Peter Struzzieri springs into action and begins to dig away the obstructed entrance, but as he works, the team is confronted with a terrifying sound that echoes through the cave. The sound is unlike anything they have ever heard before, and they are fearful that it is the sound of a deadly wild animal.

The tension in the cave escalates, and the search for the gold becomes secondary to the team's safety. They quickly abandon their quest and scramble back through the cave, careful not to brush up against the sharp rocks, keeping their lights trained on the dark shadows. The experience is a harsh reminder of the dangers involved in their treasure hunt and the unpredictability of nature.

The team makes it out of the cave unscathed by the mystery noise, but they have to come up with a new plan to get inside the tunnel. After brainstorming on their failed attempt, they have a breakthrough when they noticed something that they had missed on the map. Inside the cave, there is a smaller, seemingly insignificant passageway. The team begins to investigate, and this new find leads them into a vast chamber with natural sculptures.

During the exploration of the new area, the team finds evidence of the Japanese occupation, including a rusted radio. They speculate that the radio was used to transmit messages about the gold's location while the Japanese forces were preparing to hide it.

As they move deeper, they come across a large block of rock with what appears to be a carving on it. John Casey believes that the inscription could hold the key to the gold. The team works together to make out the strange characters that are etched into the stone. The writing is in Japanese, and it takes some time for them to decipher it, but once they do, they are excited by what they have learned.

The carved block directs them to another area of the cave. They follow the map's instructions and locate the spot where they believe they will find Yamashita's gold.

Lost Gold of World War II season 1, episode five is one of the most thrilling episodes of the series so far. The treasure hunters take risks to get to the gold, and it is obvious that they are passionate about unearthing history. The episode is packed with suspense, and it is a must-see for fans of treasure hunting.
