As the war with the Vajra intensifies, tensions rise among the citizens of Macross Frontier. In episode 9, "Friendly Fire," a series of accidents and misunderstandings lead to a devastating loss for the military. The episode opens with the crew of the SMS ship, the Macross Quarter, conducting a training exercise with their new weapons system. Their target is the VF-25, piloted by frontline pilot Alto Saotome. However, due to a malfunction in the system, the Macross Quarter fires on Alto's VF-25, narrowly missing him.
Meanwhile, on the Macross Frontier colony ship, tensions are high as the government prepares to deal with a potential Vajra attack. Sheryl Nome, a popular singer and actress, is scheduled to perform at a concert to lift the spirits of the people. However, she begins to feel uneasy about the show and tells her manager that she wants to cancel it. Her manager tries to persuade her to go through with the concert, reminding her of the importance of her role as a symbol of hope.
As the concert begins, a group of protesters gathers outside the venue, calling for an end to the war. The situation quickly turns violent, and the protesters break into the concert hall, attacking the performers and causing chaos. In the confusion, Sheryl is separated from the rest of the performers and finds herself alone on stage.
Back on the Macross Quarter, Alto confronts the captain, Ozma Lee, about the training accident. Ozma is defensive at first, insisting that the malfunction was not his fault. However, he eventually confesses that he has been struggling with the pressure of leading the SMS in the war against the Vajra. He tells Alto that he is afraid he will make a mistake that will cost them the war.
In the midst of the chaos at the concert hall, Sheryl is approached by a mysterious man who offers to help her escape. She follows him out of the building and into the streets, where they are attacked by Vajra drones. The man reveals himself to be Brera Sterne, a pilot for the enemy faction. However, he tells Sheryl that he is not there to fight, but rather to protect her from the Vajra.
As the two make their escape, Brera reveals that he is actually working undercover, gathering information on the Vajra for his own purposes. He tells Sheryl that he believes there may be a way to end the war without violence, but he needs her help to do it. Sheryl is skeptical at first, but she eventually agrees to help Brera gather information on the Vajra.
The episode ends with Ozma, who has been relieved of his duties as captain, watching as the Macross Frontier goes into battle against the Vajra. As he contemplates his future, he is approached by Alto, who tells him that he believes in him and that he has what it takes to lead the SMS. Ozma thanks him for his words of encouragement, and the two men prepare to face the enemy together.
