Made In America Season 4 Episode 10 Sub-Zero Refrigerators/Astro-Physics/Tylenol

  • March 13, 2007

In this episode of John Ratzenberger's Made in America, we explore the manufacturing processes behind some indispensable household products: Sub-Zero refrigerators, Astro-Physics telescopes, and Tylenol painkillers.

First up, we visit the Sub-Zero factory in Wisconsin to learn about what makes their refrigerators stand out in the market. We see how Sub-Zero uses the latest technology to ensure that every part of their fridge is precision-engineered to last for years, from the compressor to the door seals. We also hear from the workers who take pride in their craftsmanship and who are committed to producing a product that will keep families' food fresh and safe.

Next, we head over to Astro-Physics, a family-run business in Illinois that produces some of the world's finest telescopes. We meet Roland Christen, the founder and master optician, who shows us how he grinds and polishes the lenses with such care and precision that they're virtually free from visual distortions. We also learn how he designs and builds the sturdy mounts that are essential to telescopes' stability and accuracy. Finally, we see how the Astro-Physics team tests each telescope in real-world conditions to ensure that it meets their exacting standards.

Last but not least, we take a look at the Tylenol factory in Pennsylvania to see how this popular painkiller is made. We learn how Tylenol's active ingredient, acetaminophen, is synthesized from raw materials such as coal tar and how it's carefully measured and mixed to achieve the right dosage. We also see how the tablets are coated and packaged, while keeping in mind the importance of meeting the strict FDA regulations.

Throughout the episode, John Ratzenberger meets with the workers and experts on the factory floors and in the labs, drawing out their knowledge and enthusiasm for their craft. He highlights the ingenuity and skill involved in making these everyday products, as well as the deep commitment to quality and safety that the manufacturers bring to their work. By the end of the episode, viewers will have a newfound appreciation for the behind-the-scenes processes that go into creating things we often take for granted.
