- January 6, 2005
Mahou Sensei Negima, season 1 episode 1 "Asinus in Cathedra" is an anime series based on the manga by Ken Akamatsu. The series follows the life of a ten-year-old boy named Negi Springfield, a wizard in training who has been assigned to teach at an all-girls high school in Japan.
The episode begins with Negi riding on the back of a giant bird, flying towards the school where he will be teaching magic. As he approaches the school, he realizes that he has forgotten something important - his staff. Negi panics and begins to fall through the sky, but he is saved by a group of girls on the ground who use their magic to cushion his fall.
Negi introduces himself to the girls and explains that he is a mage in training who will be teaching at their school. The girls are surprised by Negi's age, but they are even more surprised by his accent - Negi is from Wales and speaks with a thick Welsh accent.
The girls take Negi to their dormitory where he meets his new roommate, a girl named Asuna Kagurazaka. Asuna is very hostile towards Negi and doesn't believe that he really is a mage. However, Negi is able to prove his magic abilities by conjuring up a bouquet of flowers for Asuna.
The next day, Negi begins his first day of teaching. He is assigned to teach English to a class of high school girls. At first, the girls are skeptical of Negi's ability to teach them anything, but he quickly wins them over with his cheerful personality and his magic tricks.
During the class, one of the girls asks Negi about his background. Negi reveals that he comes from a family of powerful mages and that he is being trained to become a powerful mage himself. He also reveals that he is on a mission to find his father, who disappeared years ago while on a quest for a powerful artifact.
After class, Negi meets with the headmaster of the school, a mysterious man named Konoemon Konoe. Konoemon tells Negi that he has been assigned to teach at the school as part of his training as a mage. He also warns Negi that there are those who would use his powers for evil and that he must be careful.
That night, Negi is awoken by a strange noise. He investigates and discovers that someone has broken into the school's library. Negi confronts the intruder, who turns out to be a girl named Evangeline McDowell. Evangeline is a powerful mage who has been sealed away in the library for many years. She reveals to Negi that she knows about his quest to find the artifact and that she has information that could help him.
The episode ends with Negi returning to his dormitory, excited about the new friends he has made and the adventures he is sure to have while at the school.
