From writer Matsuri Hino and director Kiyoko Sayama (the english adaption is directed by Kristi Reed) comes the Anime production of Vampire Knight, the television series. The setting is Cross Academy and the primary characters are Yuki Cross, Kaname Kuran, Zero Kiryu and the students of the academy. The premise of the story revolves around the question of whether or not mortal humans can coexist with immortal vampires. The plot line; Yuki Cross, a day time student and adopted daughter of Kaien Cross, was attacked by a vampire as a young girl only to be saved by another vampire, Kaname. In later years, this act of forbidden kindness become the basis of Yuki's desire to protect the secret of her hero and his classmates of the night class. With the help of her best friend, Zero, she assumes responsibility for keeping the mortals of the day class segregated from the immortals of the night class, all of whom are vampires. The day class students are drawn to the beauty of the night class students while completely unaware of the truth that lies beneath the surface. There does exist a bevy of conflicts for the show's characters. The most obvious of these conflicts is the ongoing relationship between Yuki and Kaname. Kaname has an obvious attraction to Yuki but must be careful to not act upon these feelings as interaction between mortals and immortals is strictly forbidden. For Yuki, it is simply a question of loyalty, or is it something more? Zero is a reluctant co-protector of the tenuous co-existence between the two classes. Zero holds a deep rooted hatred and mistrust for the vampires based on his family's tragic history at the hands of the immortals. He is genuinely torn between his friendship with Yuki, his devotion to the school and his desire for revenge. The weekly episodes are laced with secrecy, conflict and innuendo. The characters are all forced to live within the confines of two different worlds, the world they understand and a world that threatens their very survival. In the end, the elite Cross Academy must excel in-spite of the secrets that could destroy the academic institution and it's reputation.
