- November 15, 1992
In Masterpiece season 22 episode 6, titled "The Secret Agent (1)," viewers are transported to late 19th century London, a city teetering on the brink of anarchy. Amidst swirling political unrest and terrorist threats, we meet Verloc, a spy who is tasked with infiltrating anarchist groups and reporting back to his employers at the Embassy. But as Verloc begins his latest mission under the guise of running a small shop, he finds himself increasingly conflicted about his allegiances and the true cost of his actions.
Back at the Embassy, Verloc's handler, Mr. Vladimir, grows frustrated with the spy's lack of progress and pressures him to push harder for information. Meanwhile, Verloc's wife, Winnie, struggles to take care of the household and their young brother, Stevie, despite her growing unease about her husband's secretive activities.
As the tension mounts and the stakes grow higher, everyone's true loyalties are called into question. With accusations of treachery and betrayal flying left and right, it becomes nearly impossible to determine who can be trusted. Even Verloc himself begins to wonder whether he's in over his head, and whether the risks he's taking have a chance at paying off.
Complicating matters further is the presence of Ossipon, a ruthless anarchist leader who senses an opportunity to exploit Verloc's vulnerabilities for his own purposes. With Soviet agents lurking in the shadows and the specter of violence looming ever closer, this is a world where nothing is as it seems and the danger is all too real.
Will Verloc be able to navigate these treacherous waters, or will he be pulled under by the forces converging around him? Tune in to "The Secret Agent (1)" to find out.
