Miss Marple, a shrewd and observant amateur detective, returns in season 1 episode 21 of her eponymous show. Titled "They Do It With Mirrors," the episode sees Miss Marple travel to Stonygates, a Victorian Gothic mansion in the English countryside. She is summoned to the estate by her old friend Ruth Van Rydock, who is concerned about her younger sister Carrie Louise Serrocold.
Miss Marple arrives at Stonygates to find that it has been converted into a rehabilitation centre for juvenile delinquents, run by Carrie Louise’s third husband, Lewis Serrocold. The centre is dedicated to helping delinquents turn their lives around and lead better ones. However, the harmonious atmosphere is soon destroyed by the arrival of a certain Alexander Guthrie, a self-proclaimed friend of Carrie Louise’s nephew and a member of the Serrocold family.
Guthrie's arrival is followed by a series of strange occurrences, which culminate in a murder. The victim is one of the staff at the centre, and Miss Marple is soon on the trail of the killer. Her investigation takes her from Stonygates to a nearby city and back again, as she tries to unravel the web of lies, secrets, and suspicions that surround the case.
As always, Miss Marple proves to be a remarkably perceptive and resourceful detective, relying on her sharp observation skills, her vast knowledge of human nature, and her understanding of how the world works. Along the way, she comes across a cast of memorable characters, all of whom are involved in the case in one way or another.
Among the suspects are a disgruntled former employee at the rehabilitation centre, a Hollywood actress looking for a comeback, and a bitter and twisted old man who seems to have a grudge against the Serrocold family. Miss Marple also meets Carrie Louise’s troubled granddaughter, an unstable young woman with a dark past and a history of mental health issues.
As the investigation progresses, Miss Marple puts together the pieces of the puzzle, revealing the truth behind the murder and the motives of the killer. Along the way, she discovers that there are plenty of people with something to hide, and that the killer is not who anyone expected it to be.
With its atmospheric setting, its richly drawn characters, and its cleverly plotted mystery, "They Do It With Mirrors" is a classic Miss Marple episode that will keep viewers guessing until the very end. Whether you are a fan of Agatha Christie's books or simply enjoy a good whodunit, this episode is sure to satisfy.
