In Mom season 2 episode 9, titled "Godzilla and a Sprig of Mint," we see Christy continue to struggle with her newfound position as manager of the restaurant. She's trying her best to balance her responsibilities at work while also being a good mother to her kids and attending AA meetings.
Meanwhile, Bonnie is dealing with her own issues as she struggles with the fact that her ex-husband Alvin has moved on and got engaged to his girlfriend. She's feeling a mix of jealousy and sadness as she watches him begin a new chapter in his life.
The main plot of the episode revolves around Christy's attempt to impress the restaurant's new owner, Rudy, by creating a new specialty drink for the menu. Her concoction, which includes sake, ginger beer, and a sprig of mint, becomes an instant hit with the customers.
However, things take a turn for the worse when a drunk man, played by guest star Jon Cryer, comes into the restaurant and becomes extremely belligerent. He starts wrecking the place and causing a scene, prompting Christy to call the police.
The situation escalates when the man reveals that he's going through a divorce and blames his wife for everything. Christy takes him aside and tries to talk to him, telling him that she's been in his shoes before and understands what he's going through.
After some heartfelt conversation, the man apologizes and leaves the restaurant peacefully. Christy's quick thinking and empathy impress Rudy, solidifying her position as manager of the restaurant.
Meanwhile, Bonnie's storyline reaches a resolution when she decides to attend Alvin's engagement party and wish him well in his new life. She's still feeling sad about the end of their relationship, but she realizes that it's time to move on and accept the changes that life brings.
As always, Mom shows the ups and downs of life in recovery with raw honesty and humor. "Godzilla and a Sprig of Mint" is a standout episode that tackles difficult topics with grace and compassion, while still managing to make us laugh.
