From the young, talented and gone-way-too-soon (i.e. Amy Winehouse) to legends that forever shaped the face of pop culture (like Elizabeth Taylor and Steve Jobs), some real greats passed away this year. Read our coverage and remember some of the beloved figures we lost in 2011.
Preview this first track "Our Time Will Come" from the first upcoming posthumous Amy Winehouse collection. The album, "Amy Winehouse Lioness: Hidden Treasures," to be released by Island Records, debuts Dec. 5 and one pound from each copy will be donated toward The Amy Winehouse Foundation.
A British coroner has officially ruled Amy Winehouse's passing on July 23 a "death by misadventure" brought about by alcohol poisoning. Coroner Suzanne Greenway reported that Winehouse's blood-alcohol content was five times the legal drunk-driving limit.
While rumors swirling around Amy Winehouse's death initially said she had been partying on the night of her death or even met up with a mystery man who sold her drugs, the toxicology report says that Winehouse had no drugs in her system whatsoever.
Sometimes, if it sounds unbelievable, it's not to be believed. Yesterday reports started emerging that recently deceased singer Amy WInehouse had secretly been working on adopting a 10-year-old island girl named Dannika Augustine from St. Lucia. Too-good-to-be true pictures of Amy on the island playing with the little girl emerged and a heart-breaking account of yet another tragic element of the WInehouse story. Predictably, those unbelievable rumors are false.
Weird. Amy Winehouse's father apparently gave a bag full of clothes away to fans gathered outside her apartment yesterday. "These are Amy's T-shirts. This is what she would have wanted - for her fans to have her clothes," said Mitch Winehouse, according to the Sun. Amy's estranged boyfriend, Reg Traviss, reportedly joined Winehouse in handing out the items.
According to a recent report, Amy Winehouse's family is saying that the singer might have died from alcohol withdrawal. Amy was supposedly told by her doctors that she needed to step away slowly from alcohol. According to the Sun, Amy ignored these doctor orders and this is where it all went terribly bad.
While there aren't any grassy knolls nearby Amy Winehouse's apartment, there may be an unknown figure in the case of the singer's untimely death to provide some juicy new fodder for conspiracy theorists. UK tabloid The Mirror is claiming that authorities are investigating the possibility that Amy Winehouse may have met up with a "mystery man" on the night of her death.
Friends and family gathered in London this morning for a private funeral for Amy Winehouse. While the service was not open to the public, support from fans and artists alike have been pouring in from all over the web after the death of the troubled singer. We've gathered up some of the pictures, tributes and songs that fans, friends and supporters of Winehouse have put out over the last couple days here. Check out the tributes, and tell us how Amy has impacted your life in the comments section.
Not exactly the closure we were hoping for. According to a just-released AP report, The Metropolitan Police in London said a forensic post mortem "did not establish a formal cause of death and we await the results of further toxicology tests." Toxicology tests are expected to take two to four weeks. Earlier in the day, at a brief inquest into the death, coroner's officer Sharon Duff reportedly told the court that the death "was investigated by police and determined non-suspicious," meaning no foul play was suspected.
While we know how the night ended, details have started to emerge about what happened on her last night, including how she was found. Here's a rundown of what we know so far about the details from that night, based largely on reports from friends, family, the media and "inside sources," including conflicting reports about potential drug use.
Britain's Sky News reported on Saturday that troubled soul singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in Camden Square in North London. Police confirmed that they had been called to the flat by ambulance services around 11 a.m. EST. Get the latest updated news on Winehouse's death, including her autopsy results.
Well, it's official. As police reported earlier today, Amy Winehouse has, in fact, passed away. Winehouse spokesman Chris Goodman confirmed her death for CNN Saturday: "Everyone who is involved with Amy is shocked and devastated," Goodman said. "Our thoughts are with her family and friends. The family will issue a statement when ready."
Syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage, a gay man who provides sex advice to heterosexuals and homosexuals alike, is bringing his unadulterated brand of guidance to MTV in January, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"I don’t think there are any networks talking to teenagers about how to navigate sex and modern relationships. There’s been a real leap forward in information online and the way teens communicate and Dan is somebody who brings real credibility,” MTV's head of production Chris Linn told the magazine.
