In the season 3 premiere episode of My Name is Earl, titled "My Name Is Inmate 28301-016, Part 1," Earl finds himself behind bars at the Camden County Correctional Facility. Earl initially tries to get by in the prison by following the example of Joy's ex-husband, who is also incarcerated there. However, Earl realizes that his own moral code won't allow him to stoop to the same low level as his fellow inmates.
Throughout the episode, we see Earl struggling to adjust to prison life. He becomes friends with a fellow inmate, who encourages him to join a group therapy session. It's in this session that Earl realizes he needs to come clean about his crimes, and make amends to all of the people he's wronged throughout his life. He also learns that one of his former victims is also at Camden County Correctional Facility, and he starts to worry that seeking forgiveness from her could put his own safety at risk.
Meanwhile, Randy and Catalina try to come up with a way to break Earl out of prison. They come up with an elaborate plan to use Randy's truck to ram the prison gates, but the plan quickly falls apart when they realize they don't have enough gas to pull it off. They eventually decide to come clean to the prison guards, and end up getting themselves locked up in the same cell as Earl.
As the episode ends, we see Earl accepting his fate and coming to terms with the fact that he might be in prison for a long time. However, he also seems more determined than ever to continue his list, and make things right with all of the people he's hurt in the past.
Overall, "My Name Is Inmate 28301-016, Part 1" is a strong start to the third season of My Name is Earl. It's funny, but also touches on some deeper themes of redemption and forgiveness. The scenes set in the prison are particularly well done, and there's a sense of danger lurking around every corner. Fans of the show will definitely want to tune in to see how Earl handles himself behind bars, and whether he'll be able to stay true to his own moral compass.
