Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 9 Episode 5

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 9 Episode 5 The Deadly Bees

  • May 9, 1998

Mike Nelson and his robot companions, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, are back for another episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. This time, they find themselves trapped on a deserted island with a group of eccentric characters in The Deadly Bees.

The Deadly Bees is a 1966 British horror film. It tells the story of pop singer Vicki Robbins, who decides to take a break from her hectic life in London by heading to a remote island. Upon her arrival, she finds that the islanders are experiencing a massive epidemic of deadly bee attacks. She teams up with the island's beekeeper, H.W. Manfred, to try and uncover the mystery behind the deadly bees.

As per usual with Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mike and the bots are making fun of the movie as it plays. They poke fun at the cheesy special effects, bad acting, and slow plot. They also make a lot of jokes about British culture and language, which adds to the comedy.

Throughout the episode, Mike, Tom, and Crow also take breaks from the movie to perform sketches and introduce short films. One of these films is called What to Do on a Date, and it is a hilariously outdated dating guide from the 1950s. The robots also try their hands at reenacting scenes from The Deadly Bees, which results in some of the episode's funniest moments.

Overall, Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 9 episode 5, The Deadly Bees, is a great example of the show at its best. The movie is hilariously bad, and the riffing from Mike and the bots is top notch. Fans of the show will find a lot to enjoy here, and newcomers to the series will get a good introduction to what it's all about.
