Ep 9. Gorgo

In the ninth episode of the ninth season of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the crew takes on the 1961 British kaiju film, Gorgo.

The episode begins with Joel and the bots riffing on a short film about the importance of water in our daily lives, before they are transported to the feature presentation. Gorgo follows a group of treasure hunters who accidentally awaken a giant sea monster while searching for a lost sunken treasure. As they try to capture and sell Gorgo, the monster's mother comes ashore to wreak havoc on London in an attempt to rescue her offspring.

Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow are in top form as they tear apart the cheesy special effects, hammy acting, and nonsensical plot of Gorgo. They mock the film's attempts at creating suspense and tension, as well as its lazy use of stock footage. Their pop culture references and one-liners come at a rapid-fire pace, many of them landing with hilarious accuracy.

As always, Joel and the bots never let up, constantly riffing on everything from the film's wooden dialogue to its laughable attempts at portraying scientific theory. They even take time to comment on the various hairstyles and fashion choices of the film's human characters.

The crew also takes advantage of Gorgo's many bizarre moments to let their imaginations run wild. They come up with elaborate backstories for some of the minor characters and make up hilarious alternate endings to the film. They even have a few surprisingly poignant moments, such as when they reflect on the sadness of Gorgo's mother's situation.

Overall, the episode is a classic example of Mystery Science Theater 3000 at its best. The crew is firing on all cylinders, and their witty commentary and absurd tangents make Gorgo an absolute joy to watch. Whether you're a fan of terrible monster movies, or just love laughing along with some of the funniest comedians on TV, this episode is not to be missed.
