Ep 6. Storm Winds

  • February 18, 2011

In season 8, episode 6 of Naked Science titled "Storm Winds," viewers are taken on a journey to explore the devastating force of wind and its impact on our planet. The episode begins with an introduction to the basics of wind formation, including the influence of temperature, pressure, and the rotation of the Earth. From dust and sandstorms in the Sahara Desert to the most powerful hurricanes in the Atlantic, the episode explores the science of what makes these weather phenomena so destructive.

The episode takes a closer look into the science behind wind speeds. Our planet experiences varying wind speeds, which the show illustrates by traveling to the Mojave Desert and the summit of Mount Washington. At both locations scientists measure the wind speed and demonstrate the different levels and power of wind speeds. Furthermore, they use simulations to explain how the terrain impacts the wind direction and wind force. Along with the science behind wind speeds, they take you on various thrills, several ways to experience wind and weather, including hang-gliding and sailboat racing.

Next, the episode focuses on the effect of wind on coastal areas, particularly during high-tide periods. The Rogue River in Oregon is used as an example of how tides and wind can converge to create waves of immense size. This can lead to the creation of dangerous and destructive rip currents. To explain the phenomena, scientists test the waves produced by a wave machine and simulate the way they interact with the coastline, reefs, and sandbars. As the episode progresses, we are taken to the infamous Cape Hatteras in North Carolina, where we are shown how its location has been a significant factor in the high occurrence of shipwrecks from its dangerous shoreline winds.

The episode then moves on to discuss the effect that wind has on our atmosphere. In certain places on earth, the atmosphere can become quite turbulent, which can lead to a natural event known as sprites and elves. These spectacular events are a type of electrical discharge in the atmosphere. The episode takes us to the plains of Oklahoma, where scientists set up cameras to capture and study the phenomenon, as well as develop predictions on the possibility of notable electrical outbursts. Additionally, it discusses the effect of wind on air pollution, including how it can heighten some environmental factors and worsen others.

Finally, the viewers learn how wind is harnessed as a renewable energy source. The show surveys various wind turbines and examines how they function. Viewers are also shown how wind power grows worldwide while other methods are diminishing in demand. For instance, in Germany they have invested significantly in wind turbine efficiency resulting in successful energy production and reduced carbon emissions.

This Naked Science episode offers an engaging and informative look into the world of wind and its impact on our planet. Through demonstrations, animations, and on-site visits throughout the world, audiences gain valuable insights into the science behind wind itself, as well as ways in which it can help solve global energy problems. The episode also examines the potential dangers and harm that come with wind in its most destructive form.
