Betty Jo is walking along the road near the Shady Rest when she meets up with Fred and Frank Ferguson. They are old friends of Uncle Joe and Betty Jo has never met them before. The two men tell her that they have a farm that they want to sell, but no one has wanted to buy it because it is in terrible shape. The property has a lot of potential but it needs a lot of work to make it livable.
The Fergusons see that Betty Jo is a hard worker and they ask her if she would be willing to take a look at the property and see if she thinks that it could be a profitable enterprise. Betty Jo is curious and agrees to go with them to see the farm.
When they arrive, Betty Jo sees that the farm is in terrible shape. There are broken fences, rusty equipment, and weeds that are as high as her head. The farmhouse itself is a mess, with broken windows, peeling paint, and a sagging roof.
The Fergusons tell her that they have been trying to sell the farm for years, but no one wants it, and now they are desperate. They offer to sell the property to Betty Jo for a very low price and she is tempted. She realizes that with a lot of hard work, she could make a go of the farm and turn it into a profitable business.
At home, Betty Jo tells her family about the farm and the opportunity that it presents. Kate is skeptical, but Uncle Joe thinks that it is a great idea. He tells her that he will help her fix up the farm if she decides to buy it.
Kate is worried that Betty Jo will get in over her head and be unable to manage the farm by herself. She suggests that Betty Jo wait a little while and think about it before making a decision. Betty Jo agrees and decides to think about it for a few days.
During that time, Betty Jo is torn between her desire to own her own farm and her fear that she won't be able to handle it. She talks to Uncle Joe and he tells her that he will help her with the farm work and that they can make a real go of it together.
Betty Jo finally decides to take a chance and buys the farm. With the help of Uncle Joe, she begins the process of fixing up the property. They start with the farmhouse, replacing the broken windows and fixing the roof. Then they move on to the fields, clearing the weeds and repairing the fences.
As they work on the farm, Betty Jo begins to realize just how much hard work and dedication it takes to succeed in agriculture. She and Uncle Joe work long hours and sometimes have setbacks, but they remain determined to make a success of Last Chance Farm.
In the end, Betty Jo's hard work pays off. She turns the once-abandoned farm into a profitable enterprise that provides food for the Shady Rest Hotel and the surrounding community. And even though it was a difficult road, Betty Jo knows that she made the right choice in taking a chance on Last Chance Farm.
