Ep 3. Have Library, Will Travel

In the episode "Have Library, Will Travel" of Petticoat Junction season 2, the Shady Rest hotel is in desperate need of some new reading material, but there's no library nearby and they can't afford to buy new books. Kate suggests that they start a mobile library by using their old school bus, which has been collecting dust in the barn.

The girls are hesitant at first, but Uncle Joe convinces them to give it a try. He thinks it's a great idea, mainly because he can use it as an excuse to flirt with the pretty librarian they'll be borrowing books from in Hooterville.

The girls get to work organizing the bus, which is in dire need of repairs. Uncle Joe offers to do the work himself, but only if he can decorate the inside of the bus with pictures of himself.

Despite Uncle Joe's eagerness, the mobile library falls apart almost immediately. The first day they're supposed to open, the bus won't start and the radiator overheats. Things go from bad to worse when they finally make it to Hooterville, only to find out that the librarian has quit and there are no books available for them to borrow.

Kate, who is determined to make the mobile library work, comes up with a plan to bring books to the people instead. She asks the women of the valley to donate any old books they no longer need, promising to bring the books to their doorstep on the school bus.

The plan works, and the mobile library becomes a huge success. People are overjoyed to have access to new reading material, and Kate is thrilled that they were able to bring a little bit of culture and education to the valley.

Meanwhile, Uncle Joe's attempts to woo the librarian fall flat, as he quickly realizes that she's not interested in him at all. He spends the entire episode moping and sulking, until he finally accepts his defeat and moves on to the next woman in town.

In the end, the mobile library becomes a fixture in the valley, bringing joy and knowledge to people who might not otherwise have access to it. The girls are proud of their accomplishment, and Uncle Joe is happy to bask in their success (even if it's not his own). It's a heartwarming episode that showcases the power of determination and the importance of education.
