Jesse Custer and his eccentric group of allies find themselves tangling with a new foe in Preacher season 3 episode 5, titled "The Coffin." As the episode opens, old wounds are reopened for Jesse and Herr Starr as they confront one another in the present day while flashbacks show the two men during their initial meeting in the early days of Jesse's tenure as a preacher.
Meanwhile, Tulip O'Hare and Cassidy come face to face with the mysterious new arrival, who has been causing disturbances in New Orleans, and they quickly realize that they are dealing with someone much more dangerous than they initially suspected. Caught between their growing suspicion of the stranger and their own personal issues with one another, the two try to navigate a tense situation as they work to take down their new foe.
As the episode progresses, we see the various characters grappling with their own demons. Tulip struggles with her feelings of guilt surrounding a past incident while Jesse confronts the sins of his father. Cassidy, who has had a fraught relationship with his family for years, becomes embroiled in a situation that threatens to bring his past and present crashing together.
The arrival of the new villain brings out the best and worst in these characters, with alliances forged and broken as loyalties are tested. The tension is palpable as the stakes get higher and higher, and it becomes clear that no one is safe from the new evil that has taken hold in the city.
But despite all the chaos and danger, there are still moments of humor and heart. We see a softer side of Jesse as he connects with a young boy struggling with a particularly difficult sin, and Cassidy and Tulip's wry banter adds levity to the otherwise dark proceedings.
The action culminates in a tense climactic showdown that leaves the characters reeling and sets the stage for the season's remaining episodes. As always, Preacher delivers an exciting and thought-provoking hour of television, with a story that is as entertaining as it is complex.
