Ep 4. Designer Complicity

Malcolm Bright is the focus of the Prodigal Son season 1 episode 4, titled Designer Complicity. As a former FBI profiler and the son of a notorious serial killer, Bright has a unique perspective when it comes to solving crimes. In this particular episode, he is called to investigate a murder case where a popular fashion designer is found dead.

Malcolm, in his usual style, uses his exceptional analysis and deduction skills to get to the bottom of the murder. And just as always, the case is not a straight-forward one. The clues and the suspects lead him down a rabbit hole of secrets and lies that takes him deeper into the world of high fashion than he ever thought possible.

One of the first sights of the investigation is a disturbing discovery in the victim's studio that throws everyone into a state of shock and raises inevitable questions regarding Nari's death. Malcolm's father Martin Whitly (played by Michael Sheen) is locked away in a maximum-security prison, yet his advice holds a lot of weight, leading Malcolm to use him as a sounding board to make sense of the clues. Meanwhile, Malcolm's mother Jessica (Bellamy Young), a socialite, continues her relationship with a potent billionaire who displays signs of possessiveness and jealousy.

As the investigation unfolds, Malcolm attempts to find the killer within a cast of suspects, including an angry ex-employee, a scorned lover, and a possible copycat killer. A piece of evidence is found that links the murder to a heinous crime committed years prior, forcing Malcolm to revisit old wounds and face the traumas that have led him to where he is now.

The case takes him and the other detectives into the glamorous world of fashion, complete with red carpets, models, fashion editors, and photographers. We see Malcolm in a different light as he interacts with the fashion elite and struts down the runway in the name of detective work. In what is surely one of the most amusing scenes of the show, Malcolm gives an improvised fashion runway walk to prove a point and impresses everyone, even if he makes a fool of himself.

In the end, the team solves the case, and the killer is revealed, but not without a fair number of twists and turns. Like most episodes of Prodigal Son, Designer Complicity provides its viewers with a satisfying conclusion while still leaving just enough breadcrumbs to keep them curious about where the show will go next.
