Pure Design is an interior design show that revolves around creating beautiful and functional spaces that match the style and personality of the homeowners. In season 1 episode 1, we meet Lee & Stevie, a couple who are looking to upgrade their living/dining room.
The space is open plan, which presents its own set of challenges. Designer Samantha Pynn, the host of Pure Design, takes a tour of the room with Lee & Stevie to understand their needs and wants. Lee is an avid reader, while Stevie is an aspiring chef. The couple wants their living/dining room to reflect their personalities and interests, while still maintaining a cohesive style.
The first step Samantha takes is to create a floor plan that optimizes the space and creates distinct living and dining areas. She suggests adding a built-in bench along the wall, which would serve as extra seating during dinner parties and also provide concealed storage. She also suggests repositioning the lighting fixtures to create a more even distribution of light.
Next, Samantha tackles the color palette. Lee & Stevie are drawn to earth tones such as beige and brown, but Samantha wants to add pops of color to inject some personality into the space. She suggests a mustard yellow as an accent color, which Lee & Stevie are hesitant about at first. However, once they see it in action, they are sold. Samantha pairs the mustard yellow with navy blue and various shades of brown to create a warm and inviting space.
The living area is anchored by a large sectional sofa, which provides ample seating for both Lee & Stevie and their guests. Samantha adds throw pillows in different patterns and textures to create visual interest. She also suggests adding a console table behind the sofa, which can serve as additional storage as well as a display area.
For the dining area, Samantha chooses a round table, which is more conducive to conversation than a rectangular table. She pairs it with upholstered dining chairs in navy blue, which echo the color scheme of the living area. Samantha suggests hanging a pendant light fixture over the table to create a focal point.
The finishing touches are what really bring the space together. Samantha adds artwork, plants, and decorative accessories that reflect Lee & Stevie's interests and personalities. She also gives them some practical tips, such as keeping their book collection organized and displaying their cookbooks in the dining area.
Overall, Lee & Stevie are thrilled with their new living/dining room. Samantha was able to successfully combine their individual styles and interests into a cohesive and functional space. Pure Design is not just about creating a pretty space, but also about creating a space that works for the homeowners' lifestyles.
