Ready Jet Go! Season 1 Episode 9 Just the Right Distance From the Sun

  • February 18, 2016

"Just the Right Distance From the Sun" is the ninth episode of the first season of Ready Jet Go!, an animated television show aimed at young children interested in space exploration and related topics. The show follows a group of kids who embark on adventures in outer space, guided by their alien friend Jet Propulsion and his family.

In this episode, the kids are learning about the concept of habitable zones around stars - that is, the range of distances from a star where a planet could potentially have the right conditions for life to flourish. Using their spaceship, the Propulsion family takes the kids to explore different parts of the solar system and learn about how the distance from the sun affects the conditions on each planet or moon.

One of the highlights of the episode is a trip to Mercury, the closest planet to the sun. Because Mercury is so close, it gets extremely hot during the day and extremely cold at night - hence the need for a special heat shield to protect the spaceship. The kids get to see the rugged, rocky surface of Mercury up close, and learn about the challenges that would face any potential human travelers to the planet.

Another stop on the trip is Venus, which in many ways is similar to Earth - it's about the same size, and it has an atmosphere with clouds and weather patterns. However, because it's closer to the sun, Venus is extremely hot and has a toxic atmosphere that would be deadly to humans. The kids get to see how the extreme conditions on Venus would make it an unlikely candidate for life as we know it.

Moving further out from the sun, the group visits Mars, which is much colder than Earth and has a much thinner atmosphere. The kids learn about how scientists are searching for signs of life on Mars, and get to see some of the cool technology that's being developed to help explore the planet.

Finally, the group takes a trip out to Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is so massive that it has a giant storm known as the Great Red Spot, which has been raging for hundreds of years. The kids learn about how the gas giants in our solar system, like Jupiter and Saturn, have very different conditions from the rocky planets like Earth and Mars.

Overall, "Just the Right Distance From the Sun" is a great episode for kids who are interested in space and science. It does a good job of explaining the concept of habitable zones in an accessible way, and gives kids a chance to see some of the amazing sights in our solar system.
