Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel Season 23 Episode 7 A world-class MMA fight club / Baseball Hall of Famer Rod Carew

  • July 18, 2017

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel season 23 episode 7 explores two contrasting worlds of sports – mixed martial arts (MMA) fight clubs and baseball. The first segment takes us inside the world of MMA fight clubs, specifically Brazil's Chute Boxe Academy, which has produced some of the world's best fighters. The academy is known for its brutal training techniques that test the limits of its fighters physically and mentally. We meet Wanderlei Silva, a world champion MMA fighter, who shares his experience of training at Chute Boxe and how it made him both a better fighter and person.

Next, Real Sports turns its attention to baseball and profiles one of its Hall of Famers, Rod Carew. An accomplished athlete, Carew played 19 seasons in the major leagues, earning 18 All-Star selections and 7 batting titles while also winning the American League MVP award in 1977. Despite those accolades, it was Carew's two heart attacks and subsequent heart transplant that garnered national attention and inspired him to become an advocate for organ donation. We hear from Carew himself as well as those around him, who reflect on his legacy as a player and as a beacon of hope for those in need.

The juxtaposition of the two worlds explored in this episode raises questions about what it takes to achieve greatness in sports – is it the grueling training camps and physical punishment of MMA or the decades-long dedication and skill development of a baseball player like Carew? Real Sports presents both sides of the argument, leaving viewers to draw their own conclusions.
