Requiem is a psychological thriller drama series on Netflix that premiered in 2018. The show was created and written by Kris Mrksa and directed by Mahalia Belo. The series is a joint British-American production, with BBC One and Netflix being the main broadcasters.

The story follows Matilda Grey (Lydia Wilson), a world-renowned cellist, who is suddenly confronted by the suicide of her mother. Matilda is left with a sense of unease about her mother's death, and as she digs deeper into the mystery surrounding her mother's past, she discovers a connection between her mother's death and a disappearance that occurred over two decades ago. The disappearance was of a young girl in a small Welsh village, and it is clear that the incident had a profound effect on the community.

As Matilda tries to uncover the truth behind her mother's death and the disappearance, she meets Hal Fine (Joel Fry), a documentarian who is also investigating the incident. Together, they head to the Welsh village, where they encounter local police detective Nick Dean (Richard Harrington). Dean initially brushes them off, but Matilda's keen observations and her tenacity in solving the case lead him to take a closer look.

Throughout the series, the characters find themselves battling a range of dark forces that threaten to derail their search for answers. From supernatural occurrences to psychological struggles, nothing is off-limits in this riveting and suspenseful show.

One of the standout elements of Requiem is the strong performances from the cast. Lydia Wilson brings a quiet intensity to her portrayal of Matilda, and the character's journey is particularly affecting as she grapples with her own sense of identity and family history. Richard Harrington's Nick Dean is also a standout, conveying a sense of weariness that seems fitting for a detective who has dealt with the weight of unsolved cases for years.

The supporting cast also delivers excellent performances, with Clare Calbraith playing a pivotal role as Sylvia Walsh, the mother of the missing girl who Matilda is trying to find. Dyfan Dwyfor also stands out as the enigmatic and reclusive Aron Morgan, who has his own connection to the incident.

One of the show's strengths is its evocative and haunting cinematography, which captures the eerie atmosphere of the Welsh countryside. The music, too, plays a central role in creating the show's unsettling and atmospheric tone. With an original score by Dominik Scherrer, the music includes a haunting rendition of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem that recurs throughout the series.

Requiem's slow-burning narrative and measured pacing may not be for everyone, but for those willing to invest in the story, the payoffs are rich and rewarding. The show provides an intriguing exploration of grief, loss, and the secrets that can haunt families for generations. With themes of the supernatural, the psychological, and the personal, Requiem is a thought-provoking and often chilling exploration of the human psyche.

Overall, Requiem is a gripping and atmospheric drama that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. With its strong performances, haunting visuals, and enigmatic storyline, it is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good mystery. The show is a prime example of TV at its best and will leave audiences captivated until the very end.

Requiem is a series that is currently running and has 1 seasons (7 episodes). The series first aired on February 2, 2018.
