In "Sympathy for the Devil," the third episode of season one of Rizzoli & Isles, Detective Jane Rizzoli investigates a string of murders that she believes were committed by a vigilante. The episode opens with the murder of a man named Jake, who was recently released from prison after serving time for killing a young girl. The killer left a note at the scene of the crime that reads, "one down, four to go."

Rizzoli meets with Dr. Maura Isles, the medical examiner, to discuss the case. Isles finds that Jake's body shows no defensive wounds, indicating that he didn't struggle with his attacker. Rizzoli believes that the killer may have been someone who believed they were righting a wrong, but Isles is skeptical. She notes that it's hard to determine why someone killed another without examining their motive.

As Rizzoli delves deeper into the case, she discovers that Jake may not have been the last person the vigilante intended to kill. She receives a call from a woman who says that her ex-husband, who was also imprisoned for killing a child, has been released from prison. The woman, named Ana, is worried that the vigilante will come after her ex-husband next.

Rizzoli and her partner, Detective Vince Korsak, visit Ana's ex-husband, named Kevin, at his home. They are surprised to find that Kevin has already been murdered. Once again, the killer left a note at the scene of the crime that reads, "two down, three to go."

Rizzoli and Isles examine Kevin's body and find that he was killed in the same way as Jake. They also notice that Kevin's fingernails are clean, indicating that he wasn't involved in a struggle before he was killed. Rizzoli believes that the vigilante was able to subdue her victims without a fight by using a stun gun.

As Rizzoli continues to investigate the case, she meets with a man named James Nava, who is the father of one of the girls killed by Jake and Kevin. Nava is pleased to hear that someone is taking justice into their own hands, but Rizzoli tries to convince him that it's not the right way to go about things.

Rizzoli and Isles also find out that Jake and Kevin had been part of a group called the "Gang of Four" that committed a string of murders in the past. The other two members of the gang, Robert and Teddy, are now living under assumed names and are in hiding. Rizzoli believes that the vigilante is targeting the members of the Gang of Four in order to right the wrongs they committed.

Eventually, Rizzoli and Korsak track down Robert and Teddy and bring them in for questioning. They claim that they had not been involved in the recent murders and had been in hiding for years. Meanwhile, Isles finds that the stun gun used in the murders was likely homemade and searches for potential suspects.

In the end, Rizzoli and Isles are able to track down the vigilante and bring them to justice. The identity of the killer is a surprising twist that even Rizzoli did not see coming.

"Sympathy for the Devil" is an intense and thought-provoking episode that explores themes of justice, revenge, and the consequences of vigilantism. The episode is well-acted and suspenseful, with a surprising ending that will keep viewers guessing until the very end.
