In Rumpole of the Bailey season 1 episode 2, entitled "Rumpole and the Alternate Society," viewers are introduced to a new case for Horace Rumpole to tackle. The episode opens with Rumpole receiving a letter from The Honourable Society of Grays Inn, the prestigious legal society of which he is a member. The letter informs him that he has been invited to speak to The Alternate Society, a group comprised of disenchanted barristers who have turned their backs on the traditional legal system.

Unphased by this unconventional group, Rumpole accepts the invitation with his typical dry wit and wry sense of humor. His wife, Hilda, on the other hand, is less enthusiastic. She thinks he is wasting his time with a group of "misfits and malcontents" and worries that his association with the group will harm his reputation. But Rumpole, ever the champion of the underdog, sees this as an opportunity to help the disillusioned group find their way back to the noble principles of justice and fairness that attracted them to law in the first place.

When Rumpole arrives at the designated meeting place, he is greeted by a motley crew of alternative barristers, dressed in anything from jeans and t-shirts to waistcoats and fedoras. The group is led by George Frobisher, a charismatic figure who speaks passionately about the flaws and failings of the legal system and the need for change. While Rumpole is sympathetic to some of Frobisher's arguments, he is cautious about embracing the group's radical views, knowing full well the dangers of straying from established legal protocols.

But it is not long before Rumpole is drawn into the group's troubles. One of their members, a young barrister named Liz Probert, has been accused of stealing confidential papers from the chambers where she has been working as a temporary clerk. Liz maintains her innocence, insisting that the papers were planted on her and that she has been set up. Rumpole agrees to represent her in court, much to the dismay of his colleagues at the Old Bailey, who view her as guilty before even hearing the evidence.

As Rumpole delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of deceit and corruption that stretches all the way to the top of the legal profession. He must navigate the treacherous waters of barrister politics and challenge the establishment if he is to save Liz and bring justice to the Alternate Society. Along the way, he is forced to confront his own doubts and insecurities, as his loyalty to his client and his beliefs is tested to the limit.

"Rumpole and the Alternate Society" is a compelling episode that explores the complexities of legal ethics and the importance of upholding the principles of justice in the face of adversity. With its sharp writing, strong performances, and nuanced characters, it is a shining example of what makes Rumpole of the Bailey such a beloved television series. Fans of legal dramas, British humor, and social commentary will not want to miss this unforgettable episode.
