- November 2, 1995
As the title suggests, Sailor Moon Sub season 1 episode 39, titled "The Past Returns," brings back events and characters from the past and gives them a new twist. The episode starts with Usagi, Naru and Naru's mother walking past a local jewelry store where the latter expresses her desire to buy a necklace on display. While the mother is busy haggling with the storekeeper over the price, Usagi and Naru happen to see an old man being confronted by some thugs.
Usagi immediately transforms into Sailor Moon and confronts the thugs, but they turn out to be none other than the former members of the Dark Kingdom, Nephrite's henchmen, who were believed to have been destroyed. But instead, they are resurrected by a mysterious being known only as "The Spiral." The Spiral has put a spell on the henchmen that forces them to serve him. It is revealed later that The Spiral is none other than Zoisite.
Meanwhile, Tuxedo Mask is on his own mission to find the Rainbow Crystal, one of which is said to be hidden in the necklace that Naru's mother wants to buy. He uses his powers to sense the crystal's location but is interrupted by the arrival of the Dark Kingdom henchmen who are also looking for the same thing. Tuxedo Mask and the henchmen engage in a brief battle, but the former manages to get his hands on the Rainbow Crystal and escapes.
As Usagi and her friends try to figure out why the henchmen are back and who The Spiral is, they encounter a new ally, Sailor V. Sailor V is none other than Minako Aino, who has been operating as a solo vigilante under the guise of Sailor V. She informs Usagi and her friends that she has been investigating The Spiral's activities and suspects that he is behind the resurrection of the Dark Kingdom henchmen.
Later, Sailor Moon and Sailor V confront Zoisite and engage in a battle with him. In the midst of the battle, Zoisite reveals that he has no interest in the Rainbow Crystal and is only after the Silver Crystal, the most powerful artifact in the universe. He also reveals that he had previously served under Prince Endymion, Tuxedo Mask's past-life incarnation, and once again pledges his allegiance to him. Zoisite then disappears, leaving Sailor Moon and Sailor V to ponder their next course of action.
Overall, Sailor Moon Sub season 1 episode 39 is an action-packed episode that brings back familiar characters while keeping things fresh by introducing a new enemy in the form of Zoisite.
