Olivia Pope's quiver of political arrows gets a little lighter in "All Roads Lead to Fitz", the fifth episode of Scandal's sophomore run. Her quiver of romantic arrows, meanwhile, is still full of options. In the aftermath of the assassination attempt, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) is a frightened, paranoid man who sees danger in every corner of the White House.
Olivia (Kerry Washington) still wants to fix him, but after Fitz questions her loyalty and has her followed by the FBI, Liv realizes that she might be powerless against his growing paranoia. Meanwhile, her most vocal critic, Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young), is making moves of her own — including teaming up with the Vice President to plot Fitz's impeachment.
As if all of that weren't enough, Olivia finds herself at odds with her own team when they refuse to help her uncover a mystery surrounding Fitz's past. This doesn't stop her from using all of her powers of persuasion, however, to convince a judge to release confidential information about the president.
In addition to all of the drama in the White House, Scandal keeps things lively with a number of romantic subplots — including Abby's (Darby Stanchfield) ongoing flirtation with David Rosen (Joshua Malina), and Quinn's (Katie Lowes) growing bond with Gideon Wallace (Brendan Hines), the reporter she seduced in the previous episode.
As always in Scandal, it's impossible to know what's going to happen next. Episode five, "All Roads Lead to Fitz," drops a few clues about what's to come in the rest of the season, though — promising more political intrigue, twisty-turny plotting, and steamy romantic entanglements.
