In Secrets of the Viking Stone season 1 episode 7, Mystery on Runestone Hill, the team of experts follows an eccentric scholar's lead to a mysterious site on the hillside of a Michigan farm. The team, led by host Peter Stormare, is excited to finally have a chance to investigate the site, which has been hidden away for decades and is rumored to be connected to Viking explorers who arrived in the Americas well before Columbus.
As the team arrives at the site, they are immediately struck by the eerie stillness of the place. The wind has stopped, and the only sounds they hear are the rustling of leaves and occasional birdsong. Despite the beautiful day, the feeling of unease hangs over the team as they begin their investigation.
The site consists of a runestone, a large boulder covered in Viking runic script, which has been partially exposed by past excavations. Alongside the runestone are several other large boulders, some with strange symbols etched into them. Scattered around the site are smaller rocks and stones, some placed in a seemingly deliberate pattern.
As the team begins to explore the site, they quickly discover several oddities. One of the large boulders appears to have been split in half by some massive force, and there is evidence of strange charring on the stones. Another large boulder has a deep pit dug into it, which seems to have been filled with water at some point.
The team also uncovers a small pile of human bones, which is particularly troubling. The bones are too old to be from any recent death, and they appear to have been intentionally buried at the site. The team collects samples of the bones and soil and sends them for analysis.
As they continue their investigation, the team discovers more and more strange features of the site. One of the smaller rocks has a hole drilled into it, which appears to be a marker for the winter solstice. Another stone has a pattern of lines etched into it, which seems to be a map of the surrounding hills and valleys.
At the end of the day, the team is left with more questions than answers. Who built this site, and for what purpose? What do the strange symbols and features mean, and how do they fit into our understanding of Viking exploration in North America? And, perhaps most worrying of all, what happened to the people whose bones were buried at the site?
Throughout the episode, Secrets of the Viking Stone does an excellent job of balancing the excitement and intrigue of the investigation with the scientific rigor necessary to fully understand the site. The team consults with experts in history, archaeology, geology, and more, and uses cutting-edge technology to analyze every aspect of the site.
Overall, Mystery on Runestone Hill is a fascinating and thought-provoking episode of Secrets of the Viking Stone, and is sure to leave viewers eager to learn more about the history and mysteries of North America's Viking past.
