Sesame Street Season 14 Episode 2 Big Bird's First Day at Camp
- January 1, 1982
Big Bird's First Day at Camp is the second episode of the fourteenth season of Sesame Street. The episode follows Big Bird as he prepares for his first day of summer camp. Big Bird is nervous because he has never been away from his friends and family for an extended period of time before. However, his Sesame Street friends all rally around him to help him feel more comfortable about going to camp.
The episode opens with Big Bird receiving a postcard from his cousin who is already at summer camp. The postcard makes Big Bird excited to go to camp because it looks like so much fun. Elmo and Snuffy come by to help Big Bird pack for camp, and they bring along a special surprise - a friendship bracelet they made for him to wear while he's away.
The gang then sings a song about the joys of summer camp and the excitement of trying new things. Oscar the Grouch even joins in, but he sings about how he doesn't like camp because it's too clean for him. The song ends with a message of encouragement and support for Big Bird - that everyone believes he can have a great time at camp.
The next day, Big Bird heads off to camp with his bags packed and his friendship bracelet on his wrist. When he arrives at camp, he's greeted by his counselor, who gives him a tour of the facilities. Big Bird is amazed at all the fun things he'll be able to do, from swimming to hiking to arts and crafts.
However, things start to go downhill for Big Bird when his friendliness towards the other campers is misunderstood by some of the other birds. They think he's trying to boss them around, and they start to push him away. Big Bird becomes sad and wants to leave camp, but his friends back on Sesame Street encourage him not to give up just yet. They remind him that he's always been a great friend to them, and that he just needs to keep being himself at camp.
With a renewed sense of confidence, Big Bird tries again to make friends at camp. This time, he takes a different approach by asking others what they want to do rather than suggesting activities. This strategy works, and Big Bird starts to make new friends. They all have fun together, and Big Bird even manages to convince some of them to help him with a birdhouse-building project.
The episode ends with Big Bird feeling happy and proud of himself for having a successful first day at camp. He feels grateful to his Sesame Street friends for their words of encouragement and for sending him off with such a special friendship bracelet. The message of the episode is that it's ok to be nervous or scared when trying new things, but with a little determination and support from friends, anyone can have a great time doing something new.
