Ep 5. Episode 5

Shtisel season 2 episode 5 continues to explore the complex relationships and struggles within the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of Jerusalem. In this episode, we see a focus on the women of the community and the challenges they face in upholding traditional gender roles while also seeking autonomy and fulfillment.

The episode opens with Ruchami, wife of shul gabbai (synagogue official) Lippe Weiss, telling her husband that she has accepted a job as a kindergarten teacher. Lippe struggles to accept this decision, as it goes against the belief that women's place is in the home. Ruchami, however, is determined to prove that she can balance both her responsibilities as a mother and wife and her desire for a career.

Meanwhile, Shira, the daughter of the Shtisel family, is preparing for her upcoming wedding. As she tries on her wedding dress, she expresses her anxiety about her future role as a traditional wife and mother. She confides in her aunt, Giti, about her concerns, and Giti comfortingly reminds Shira that she can still find meaning and purpose within those roles.

At the same time, Giti is struggling with her own marital issues. Her husband, Lipa, has become increasingly distant and cold towards her, and she suspects he may be having an affair. She seeks guidance from the community's rabbi, who advises her to focus on improving herself rather than worrying about her husband's actions.

In a poignant scene, Ruchami visits her mother, who suffers from dementia and is living in a care facility. As she sings to her mother, Ruchami reflects on the sacrifices her mother made as a traditional woman, and wonders if her own choices will lead to regret in the future.

The episode concludes with a beautiful scene at Shira's wedding, where the women of the community gather to dance and celebrate. Through their movements, we see the joy and unity these women can find within their shared cultural traditions.

Overall, Shtisel season 2 episode 5 provides a nuanced and empathetic portrayal of the complexities and tensions within the ultra-Orthodox community in Israel. It highlights the struggles faced by women in particular, as they seek to reconcile tradition with personal fulfillment and autonomy.
