In Something Borrowed, Something New, fashion experts Kelly Nishimoto and Sam Saboura give brides-to-be the ultimate choice between wearing a family heirloom or a brand new wedding gown. In season 3 episode 3, titled "Southern Barbie Bride," the show features bride-to-be Megan, who is looking for the perfect dress for her southern wedding.
Megan, a self-proclaimed "southern belle," is torn between wearing her grandmother's 1950s tea-length wedding dress or a brand new gown with a southern twist. She seeks the help of Kelly and Sam to make her decision.
Kelly and Sam start by taking Megan to the salon, where she tries on a few new gowns. The first dress is a fit-and-flare mermaid-style gown with a lace bodice and tulle skirt. The second is a more traditional ballgown with a sweetheart neckline, lace applique, and a full skirt. While Megan likes both dresses, she's not sure if either gown screams "southern."
Next, the trio heads to Megan's grandmother's house to take a look at the heirloom dress. The dress is made of a delicate lace fabric with a tea-length skirt, a sweetheart neckline, and a small train. Megan loves the dress but is concerned it might be too old-fashioned for her southern-themed wedding. The dress also needs some alterations to fit Megan's petite frame.
After the visit with Megan's grandmother, Kelly and Sam take Megan to a southern-style boutique to try on a few more dresses. The first gown is a blush ballgown with a tulle skirt, beaded bodice, and off-the-shoulder neckline. The second dress is a fitted, off-white, lace top with a tulle tea-length skirt and a ribbon sash. Megan loves both gowns, but once again, she's not sure if they are the perfect fit for her southern-themed wedding.
Down to the wire, Megan must make a decision about her wedding gown. In the end, Megan chooses to go with her grandmother's beloved heirloom gown with the hope of adding some southern elements to it. She enlists the help of Kelly and Sam to incorporate a few modern additions to the dress, such as a detachable skirt, a lace overlay, and some delicate beading. Megan is thrilled with the final result and thinks her grandmother would be proud to see her walking down the aisle in her dress.
Overall, season 3 episode 3 of Something Borrowed, Something New proves that even old-fashioned wedding gowns can be transformed into stunning modern dresses with a little creativity and a touch of southern charm.
