Samuels and the Kid is the fifth episode of the first season of the American drama television series St. Elsewhere. The episode was directed by Michael Pressman and written by John Masius. The episode was aired on November 8, 1982, on NBC. The runtime for this episode was 50 minutes.

The episode centers around Peter White (Terence Knox), a teenager who was brought into the hospital after being struck by lightning. Peter is a computer prodigy and is about to launch a new game that he has developed. The doctors at St. Eligius are impressed with his abilities, and Dr. Samuels (Norman Lloyd) takes a special interest in Peter.

Dr. Samuels is having a tough time dealing with the pressures of running a hospital. He finds solace in Peter's company and begins to mentor him. He takes Peter under his wing and teaches him about the hospital and what it takes to be a doctor.

Meanwhile, Dr. Craig (William Daniels) is dealing with his own problems. He is up for review by the hospital board, and he is worried about losing his position. To make matters worse, his mentor, Dr. Auschlander (Ed Begley Jr.), is starting to show signs of dementia. Dr. Craig must navigate these issues while trying to maintain his composure.

In the midst of all this, Peter's parents arrive at the hospital. They are not happy that their son is spending so much time with Dr. Samuels. They feel that he is neglecting his studies and the development of his game. They ask Dr. Samuels to leave their son alone, but he refuses. Dr. Samuels sees something special in Peter and is determined to help him succeed.

As Peter's health begins to decline, Dr. Samuels becomes more and more invested in his care. He puts his own health and job on the line to make sure that Peter receives the best treatment possible. In the end, Dr. Samuels is able to help Peter, but it comes at a great cost.

Samuels and the Kid is a powerful episode that explores the relationships between doctors and their patients. It shows the lengths that doctors will go to help their patients, and the toll that it takes on them. The episode also touches on themes of mentorship, family conflict, and the pressures of leadership. The performances by Norman Lloyd and Terence Knox are particularly strong and make this episode a standout in the series.
