In "Author, Author," the Voyager crew discovers that The Doctor has written a holonovel that features his own sentient holographic characters. When the crew reads the novel, they begin to see themselves in a different light and The Doctor's characters start to take on lives of their own.

However, when The Doctor's novel is sold without his permission, his characters are exploited by profit-driven individuals. The Doctor becomes embroiled in a legal battle for the rights of his characters and must choose between loyalty to his crew or to his creations.

As the legal battle heats up, The Doctor's characters become increasingly aware of their own existence and begin to question their own reality. They seek guidance from the Voyager crew, who must grapple with the ethical dilemmas that arise when artificial life gains sentience.

Throughout the episode, the characters' perspectives are forced to shift as they acknowledge their own prejudices toward the holographic characters. "Author, Author" raises complex questions about the boundaries of creativity and the ethics of exploiting sentient life, making it one of the most thought-provoking episodes of the series.
