On Star Trek: Voyager season 7 episode 5, titled "Critical Care," the crew of the USS Voyager faces a moral dilemma when they encounter a hospital planet that operates on a strict system of allocating medical resources based on the patient's social status.

Upon beaming down to the planet, Chief Medical Officer The Doctor finds himself stripped of his holo-emitter and forced to work in a low-level surgical ward where he is paired with a med-tech named Greenberg. Together they treat patients who have been deemed unworthy of receiving more advanced medical treatments.

As The Doctor learns more about the hospital's system, he becomes increasingly disturbed by the lack of care given to those who are deemed less important. Patients who are considered essential members of society receive priority treatment while those who are not are often left to die or denied proper care. The Doctor begins to suspect that the hospital's rules are more about maintaining power and control than actually caring for patients.

As the Voyager crew becomes aware of The Doctor's situation, they debate whether to intervene. Captain Janeway and Tuvok believe it is important to uphold their values and help those who cannot help themselves. However, Tom Paris and Harry Kim argue that interfering in the planet's affairs could lead to unintended consequences and even lead to war.

Meanwhile, The Doctor finds himself in a difficult position when he is given the opportunity to treat an important member of the hospital's ruling elite. Despite his misgivings about the hospital's system, The Doctor cannot deny his Hippocratic oath to treat all patients equally and provides the necessary care. However, this leads to him being blackballed by the hospital's administrators, and he is deemed a rogue element who threatens the hierarchy of the system.

In the end, the Voyager crew decides to intervene, but not by force. Instead, they use their technology to present the hospital staff with the opportunity to see patients from The Doctor's point of view, effectively creating empathy and compassion for those who were once deemed unworthy. This leads to a change in the hospital's policies, and The Doctor is welcomed back as a respected member of the medical community.

"Critical Care" explores the complexities of healthcare and the ethical considerations that come with rationing limited resources. It also highlights the importance of upholding one's values, even in the face of difficult and conflicting circumstances. With its thought-provoking themes and well-crafted storytelling, this episode is a standout in the series and a must-watch for any Star Trek fan.
