The Star Trek season 3 episode 16, titled Mark of Gideon, follows the crew of the USS Enterprise as they arrive at the planet Gideon, which is an overcrowded world with a population of over 20 billion. Despite being extremely overpopulated, the planet's inhabitants refuse to allow anyone to leave or immigrate to other planets, leading Captain Kirk to question why they requested a Federation ambassador.

As the crew investigates, they discover that the planet is highly secretive and has no record of any diseases, even though their population density would suggest otherwise. Further investigation leads to the discovery that the planet's leader, Hodin, has deliberately kept the population high in an attempt to create a utopian society.

The crew is baffled by the fact that they are unable to leave the planet, and when Captain Kirk tries to leave on his own, he is transported back to the same location, indicating that there is some form of force field or cloaking technology at play. Meanwhile, Hodin becomes increasingly anxious about the crew's presence and fears that their technology will contaminate the planet's perfect environment.

As the situation becomes increasingly dire, a beautiful woman named Odona appears on the Enterprise, and Kirk quickly becomes smitten with her. Odona reveals that she is from a planet that is similar to Gideon, but with far fewer inhabitants. She expresses her sorrow over the loss of her people when her planet was destroyed and requests asylum on the Enterprise. Kirk agrees, and Odona is transported aboard the ship.

As the crew tries to figure out how to escape from Gideon, Odona reveals that she is actually a clone created by Hodin, the leader of Gideon. Hodin created Odona as a means to spread a deadly disease and control the population. He had hoped that by exposing the virus to the Enterprise crew, they would spread it to other planets and slowly reduce the galaxy's population.

Upon discovering Hodin's plan, Captain Kirk offers to work with him to find a peaceful solution, but Hodin insists that he cannot allow his society to be contaminated by outsiders. The episode climaxes into a perilous standoff, as the Enterprise crew tries to escape the planet before becoming infected by the deadly virus.

Overall, Star Trek season 3 episode 16, Mark of Gideon, presents questions about the ethics of population control, utopian societies, and the necessity of preserving the status quo. The episode also explores love, loyalty, and the lengths that people will go to preserve their beliefs and way of life. With excellent performances from the cast and a gripping plot, Mark of Gideon stands out as one of the must-watch episodes of the Star Trek franchise.
