At the 20th Annual Academy Awards Sir Laurence Olivier's adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet picked up the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the year, as well as the Best Actor award for Sir Olivier. The Tom and Jerry Series won once again for Short Subjects/Cartoon of the year for The Little Orphan and Jerry Wald received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for his contributions to the motion picture industry.
