Ep 13. A Man's Teeth Are Not His Own

Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) has a dental emergency in the middle of the night; he wakes Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) to tell her that he broke a tooth. Laura offers to stay up and help him take care of it, but Rob insists that she go back to bed. The next morning, Rob goes to see his dentist, Dr. Herman (Jackie Coogan), who tells him that the tooth needs to be extracted. Rob is horrified at the thought of losing a tooth and begins to imagine all sorts of disasters that might occur if he is missing a tooth.

Meanwhile, Laura is worried about Rob and goes to see their friends Millie (Ann Morgan Guilbert) and Jerry (Jerry Paris), who recommend that she visit Dr. Krantz (Charles Lane), a dentist who has a reputation for being the best in town. Laura decides to use her charm to get an appointment with Dr. Krantz for Rob.

When Rob finds out that Laura has made an appointment with Dr. Krantz, he is furious. He insists that he wants Dr. Herman to extract the tooth and that he doesn't need to see another dentist. Laura tries to reason with him, but he won't budge.

On the day of the appointment, Laura tries to persuade Rob to go to Dr. Krantz's office, but he refuses. The situation becomes ridiculous when Laura starts hiding the car keys and Rob starts jumping up and down on the bed to try and reach them. Finally, Laura pretends to give up and tells Rob that she'll get Dr. Herman to come to their home to extract the tooth.

Dr. Herman arrives and Rob starts to calm down. However, when Dr. Herman mentions that he might have to use a local anesthetic, Rob starts to panic again. He decides to go with Laura to see Dr. Krantz after all.

When they arrive at the dentist's office, Rob is still nervous. However, he is pleasantly surprised by Dr. Krantz's demeanor. He is kind, patient, and gentle, and he puts Rob at ease. Dr. Krantz tells Rob that he doesn't need to have the tooth extracted after all, that he can fix it with a simple filling.

Rob is overjoyed and grateful. He thanks Dr. Krantz and Laura and leaves feeling much better. Laura praises Dr. Krantz and tells Rob that his teeth are in good hands with him. Rob agrees and says that a man's teeth are not truly his own, but belong to his dentist.

The episode ends with Rob and Laura sitting on the couch, laughing and joking about Rob's tooth drama. Laura says that she's glad everything worked out, and Rob agrees. He admits that he was wrong to be so stubborn and that he should have listened to Laura in the first place. Laura smiles contentedly and Rob leans over to kiss her. The camera pans out as they embrace, and the credits roll.
