Ep 1. Vacation

As soon as the intro ends, the viewers are reminded of the fact that it's the summer of 1990 with Jenkintown's perfect 80s family, The Goldbergs. Adam, who is now in high school and the fans' favorite, is introduced at the beginning, doing one of his iconic monologues. He talks about how his summer so far has been boring, consisting of only hanging out with his grandpa at the mall. However, he is excited that the family has finally decided to take their annual summer vacation.

The next scene shows Erica and Barry coming back home from their respective summer jobs. Erica worked at a country club and Barry worked at a Pizza place, reminiscing their summer jobs' perks and mishaps. This is exciting news for Adam, who thinks that it will be an endless summer of fun, sun, and hanging out with his friend. However, Chad seems more interested in spending time with his new girlfriend, Stacey, instead of Adam.

Meanwhile, Erica tries to convince everyone to go out at night and check out the local clubs. However, her plans are foiled when Murray informs her that they will be having family game night every night. This is when we are introduced to 'The Goldbergs Vacation Game,' a board game that Beverly made that involves answering questions based on their previous vacation experiences.

Throughout the episode, the viewers get to enjoy guest appearances from adults like a younger Wyatt Oleff, who plays The Karate Kid, and Dan Fogler, who plays the father of Stacey. However, the episode's highlight is when Pops, who stayed behind and never went to vacations with the Goldbergs, arrives in Ocean City with an unexpected new friend, Kit, who is a senior citizen that Pops met in Atlantic City.
