In The Last Alaskans season 2 episode 2, titled "Only The Strong," we continue to follow the lives of the few remaining families who live in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. With the winter season coming to an end, the families start to prepare for the spring season.
The episode begins with Bob Harte, who is one of the most experienced trappers in the area, checking his trap line. He hopes to catch some wild animals like wolves and wolverines. Meanwhile, his neighbor Heimo Korth starts to prepare for the upcoming spring and begins to cut down trees to make some much-needed repairs to his cabin.
The only female member of the group, Tyler Selden, who is married to Ashley, spends her time with her husband looking for caribou. They have been unsuccessful in their attempts so far, but this episode sees them strategizing to improve their chances of catching one.
On the other hand, Ray Lewis, who is Heimo's son-in-law, sets out for a solo trek, in an attempt to test his limits, both physically and mentally. He specifically wants to test his ability to live in the wilderness on his own, and sets out with minimal supplies, hoping to stay out in the wild for a week.
Finally, we get to the last family, the Seldens. They continue to work on their cabin and try to make it more cozy and comfortable. They also prepare for the up-coming spring by stocking up essential supplies like food and medicine.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to stunning views of the Arctic landscape, and the various wildlife that exists in the area. We see wolves, caribou, and different types of birds. The show also highlights the challenges that each family faces when living in such a remote environment, from the harsh weather conditions to the physical and mental toll it takes to survive.
Overall, the episode is a fascinating glimpse into the unique and challenging lives of the last remaining families in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It shows their determination, resilience, and strength, as they face the harsh realities of living in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments on earth.
