In The Last Alaskans season 3 episode 9, titled The Great Unknown, the residents of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge continue to face the challenges of living off the grid in the remote Alaskan wilderness. With winter approaching, the families are busy preparing for the harsh weather conditions that will soon set in.
For Heimo Korth and his wife Edna, hunting is a way of life. In this episode, Heimo sets out on a moose hunt, hoping to fill his freezer before the snow starts to fall. Meanwhile, his neighbors Tyler and Ashley Selden are also out hunting, but they face a unique challenge: their dog, Atlas, has gone missing.
Elsewhere in the Refuge, Bob Harte is working on his cabin, which is in need of some repairs before the winter hits. He spends his days sawing and hammering, trying to make sure that his home will be safe and warm for the cold months ahead.
The episode also follows the journey of newcomer Ricko DeWilde, who is learning how to live off the land in the Alaskan wilderness. Ricko is from a Native community in the nearby village of Arctic Village, but he has always been drawn to the wilderness. He spends his days trapping and hunting, and he hopes to one day be able to provide for his family in the same way that the residents of the Refuge do.
As always, the beauty and harshness of the Alaskan wilderness is on full display in this episode. From the snow-capped mountains to the sweeping tundra, the landscape is both breathtaking and unforgiving. The Last Alaskans season 3 episode 9 provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of those who have chosen to make this remote wilderness their home, and the challenges they must overcome to survive.
