The Last Enemy season 1 episode 1, titled "Episode 1," is a post-apocalyptic thriller that takes place in a world where the United Kingdom is under surveillance and the government has implemented a controversial ID card system. In this dystopian world, the story follows a character named Stephen Ezard, a brilliant mathematician who had fled the country after his brother's death ten years earlier.

Stephen, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, returns to London from China to attend his brother's funeral and discovers that the country is now seemingly obsessed with security and he is unable to recognize the place he once called home. Promptly upon his arrival in the UK, Stephen is given an ID card, which he is hesitant to accept. The card identifies him completely, down to his medical and credit history, and he knows it's watched constantly by the government.

Shortly after his brother's funeral, Stephen becomes involved with a group of activists who are working against the government and protesting against the ID card system. The group includes his brother's former girlfriend, Eleanor, and a journalist named Barbara who's determined to uncover the truth about the government's surveillance tactics.

As the plot unfolds, Stephen finds himself wrapped up in a game of mirrors as he works to uncover the truth about his brother's death and his own traumatic past while being hunted down by the mysterious security forces that control the UK. The closer he gets to revealing the truth, the more he finds himself in danger.

The show's first episode sets up a compelling story that is full of twists and turns, as it showcases a grim, cautionary tale of a society where the government knows everything about its citizens and takes extreme measures to combat perceived threats. The viewer immediately understands the heavy-handed, over-reaching oppression within the UK, where all of the citizens' data and activities are monitored and categorized as suspicious, regardless of whether they pose a genuine threat or not. The series is always in a state of tension and unease, and seeing things from Stephen's perspective only heightens the apprehension.

Overall, The Last Enemy season 1 episode 1, titled "Episode 1," is a fantastic start to this thought-provoking and intense series. It leaves the viewer wanting more and sets up the story for an epic ride through the rest of the season. The acting is top-notch, the direction is impeccable, and the story is both gripping and chilling. This show is highly recommended, especially for fans of dystopian thrillers that explore big societal questions.
