Freddie is an actor, working now only occasionally and spending a great deal of time reminiscing about his career. Stuart, who used to work in the hospitality industry, does the cooking and hosting of guests, of which there are many in this show. Each episode presents Freddie and Stuart as they visit with friends and family. Violet (Frances de la Tour) is a woman of an uncertain age who likes men?.a lot. Ash (Iwan Rheon) is the young straight guy who lives upstairs. Stuart and Freddie have an old dog named Balthazar, although he has yet to make an appearance on screen. And then there is Mildred (Hazel Douglas), Stuart's mother, who doesn't learn of the couple's relationship until the sixth episode.
What the show lacks in action and change of scene is thoroughly made up for by the wit (usually venomous) of the dialogue.

The series finale documents a year in the life of Freddie and Stuart, who celebrate their inheritance and a birthday. Violet, meanwhile, moves forward after her divorce; and Ash has important news.

After Freddie and Stuart have a falling out, Stuart moves in with Ash and Violet moves in with Freddie. It doesn't take long, however, before the new flatmates begin to drive each other crazy. Violet and Ash devise a plan to return things to normal.

Violet gets anxious when her wealthy sister Lillian, whom she hasn't seen in years, decides to visit. Worried that Lillian will discover the truth, Violet and friends hatch an elaborate plan. Meanwhile, Ash wants to introduce girlfriend Jess to the group.
