Ep 3. You're All Going to Diet

In season 3 episode 3 of The Last Man on Earth, titled "You're All Going to Diet," the small surviving group is dealing with the idea of food as their supplies run extremely low. The episode starts with Tandy and the survivors raiding some old military reserves in order to extract potassium nitrate from old fertilizer. They hope to use this to make a homemade bomb in order to catch some fish for food. However, everything seems to go wrong when they find out that the bomb they rigged together doesn't work.

To make matters worse, Todd has put on a significant amount of weight since the last time they got ahold of any real food. While death seems to be imminent and the group is losing hope, Carol comes up with the idea to have Todd lose weight by locking him in stocks. As Todd is put on display in the stocks, the group sees how truly hungry they all are and start to turn on each other over the little bit of food they have left. A wrestling match over a piece of cake results in Melissa being knocked unconscious.

In a parallel storyline, Phil is left to his own devices in the RV in the desert. Phil is stranded and left behind as the others take the car, and uses his newfound freedom to record a message about his life as the last man on earth. In the midst of his recording, Phil meets another survivor and takes them back to the others.

As the group is forced to come to terms with the fact that there isn't much food left, Tandy decides to use the last of their fuel to create a make-shift flamethrower to catch fish. After they finally get hold of some fish, the group feasts, but starts to feel guilty over the huge amount of weight Todd has lost in the stocks. They decipher a clue in the message Phil recorded that leads them to believe there are more survivors on the way. The episode ends with the group preparing to meet these new survivors, but not certain whether this is a good thing or not.

Overall, "You're All Going to Diet" is a comedic episode that touches on themes of survival and self-control. The group is constantly put to the test as they dodge starvation and the temptation to fight over the little food they have, all while their hope for survival continues to be tested. As the characters continue to evolve and confront their own inner demons, the show remains fresh and entertaining through its unique approach to the post-apocalyptic genre.
