Mary Richards is trying to plan a surprise birthday party for Lou Grant, but Lou hates celebrating his birthday. Meanwhile, Rhoda is having trouble finding a job and feeling useless, and Phyllis is upset that her husband Lars has forgotten their wedding anniversary. As the day goes on, Mary's attempts to keep the surprise party a secret become increasingly difficult, and she must figure out a way to ensure Lou has a great birthday without ruining the surprise.
