The Maxx is a mixed animation, action-adventure series based on a popular Image Comics character created by Sam Keith. The show stars Dave, a man who straddles two worlds. In the real world he's a homeless man whose current residence is a box in an alley. In the world of Pangea he is The Maxx, protector of The Outback and its Jungle Queen. A queen who has a real world connection in the form of Julie Winters, the freelance social worker who tends to bail Dave out of superhero dealings. Though aware of the shift in reality, Dave doesn't have the ability to control when he returns to his normal life. He also knows Julie isn't aware of her role in Pangea. The only other person who does know is Mr. Gone, a self-proclaimed student of the mystic arts who can traverse other people's Outbacks. This includes Sarah, a teenager who has a paternal connection to Mr. Gone. On both worlds The Maxx battles a race of small, eyeless beings known as the Isz. In The Outback the Isz are omnivorous annoyances. However, once they cross realities, the Isz become cannibalistic creatures. While The Maxx sees them as they are, normal people see them in their representative, human disguises. The Maxx premiered as part of the NTV Oddities series in the mid-1990s. With words by Keith, art by Bill Messner-Loebs, and direction from Gregg Vanzo, the series mixed standard, detailed, two-dimensional animation with more cartoonish characterizations as well as CGI and live-action in order to distinguish the point-of-views of the various main characters as well as the difference between reality and The Outback. Thirteen episodes, running 11 minutes apiece, ran on MTV Oddities from April to June of 1995. Since its initial premiere the series has been available through VHS and DVD sets as well as direct download from MTV.com. The entire run of The Maxx can now be seen at MTV's liquidtelevision.com
