Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki is a collection of twenty OVAs (or Original Video Animations, features intended for home-video release) covering the various characters within one of the multitude of Tenchi Muyo universes. The series begins as Tenchi Masaki, a teenager helping out at his father's shrine, uncovers an alien space pirate inside of a green crystal, which only serves as the catalyst to encounter other denizens from the far reaches. As the series goes on, it becomes more and more of a typified "harem" anime with a large female cast all interested in Tenchi for various reasons, including the revelation that he is the member of an interstellar royal bloodline. Said female characters include: the hedonistic space pirate Ryoko Hakubi, who gains her powers from a trio of mystical gems and pilots a shape-shifting space ship named Ryo Ohki; Ayeka Masaki Jurai, the princess of Jurai who hunts for her half-brother Yosho and shares her bloodline with Tenchi; Sasami Masaki Jurai, Ayeka's sister and fellow Juraian princess who usually helps out with cooking for everyone and may have merged with one of the Juraian God-trees; ditzy Galaxy Police detective Mihoshi Kuramitsu who is out hunting for Ryoko; and top scientist Washu Hakubi, whose unparalleled genius allowed her to create Ryoko, her three gems, and the substance which gave Ryo Ohki a humanoid form. In the midst of all this rising estrogen count among characters is an array of antagonizing individuals including Kagato, a student of Washu who regularly razes civilizations in pursuit of power and technology; Doctor Clay, a rival of Washu who is told to capture Washu for his Lady Tokimi; Lady Tokimi is a nigh-omnipotent goddess and sister of Washu and whose control of the entire universe causes trouble only because she is unaware and not deliberately malicious; Z-0010332536893, or simply Z, is a cosmic powerhouse who stalks Tenchi within his own home in an effort to compare his power with the Juraian prince's; finally, there is the Counter-Actor, another cosmic entity created as a reaction to the dimensional manipulation by the Queen of Jurai who spurs Z on his quest to challenge Tenchi.
