Ep 2. The Grandparents

The Mick season 1 episode 2, "The Grandparents," picks up right where the pilot left off. Mickey (Kaitlin Olson) is still struggling to adjust to her new life as guardian to her niece and nephews, and things are not made any easier when her estranged parents show up unexpectedly.

Over the course of the episode, we learn more about Mickey's complicated family history. Her wealthy parents, who had disowned her years earlier, arrive with an offer to take the kids off her hands. At first, Mickey sees this as a golden opportunity to regain some of the freedom and flexibility she had before taking on this responsibility.

But as the grandparents' true intentions become clear, Mickey begins to feel increasingly conflicted. Her father (played by the legendary Martin Mull) is as manipulative and self-serving as ever, while her mother (played by Tricia O'Kelley) seems to be sincere in her desire to reconnect with Mickey and the kids.

As the grandparents settle in, they begin to clash with Mickey over her unconventional parenting style. They try to impose their own rules and routines on the household, leading to a series of increasingly absurd conflicts. Meanwhile, Mickey must juggle her attempts to keep the peace with her ongoing efforts to keep track of her wild niece and nephews.

One of the standout moments of the episode comes when Mickey's youngest nephew, Ben (Jack Stanton), accidentally swallows a key and needs emergency medical attention. Forced to navigate the challenges of the American healthcare system, Mickey finds herself getting into a heated debate with a hospital administrator (played by an uncredited Dave Foley) over the exorbitant cost of an X-ray.

Overall, "The Grandparents" is a strong episode and a great follow-up to the pilot. It further develops the show's characters and relationships, while also delivering plenty of laughs and absurd situations. Fans of Kaitlin Olson's trademark mix of irreverent humor and genuine heart will not be disappointed.
