Mindy, the titular character of The Mindy Project, is a 30-something obstetrician/gynecologist living in New York City. Season 5 follows her as she navigates single motherhood and a changing professional landscape, all while trying to keep her personal life in order. In episode 10, "Take My Ex Wife, Please," Mindy finds herself in the middle of a messy situation involving her ex-husband, Danny.
At the beginning of the episode, Mindy is feeling confident and in control. She has a successful practice, a happy son, and a promising new romance with her co-worker, Ben. However, when Danny's new wife, Sarah, goes into labor at the same hospital where Mindy works, things quickly become complicated. Mindy is forced to confront her feelings about her ex-husband, who she still harbors some resentment towards for their messy divorce. Complicating things even further is the fact that Mindy and Sarah are not exactly friends, and Mindy struggles to put aside her own feelings in order to be there for her patient.
As the episode goes on, the situation becomes increasingly tense. Sarah's labor isn't progressing as it should, and Mindy ends up being the one who has to make a difficult decision about how to proceed. Meanwhile, Danny is lurking around the hospital, adding to Mindy's stress levels. Rebecca Rittenhouse, who plays Sarah, delivers a powerful performance as Mindy's nemesis-turned-patient, showing off a vulnerability that we haven't really seen from her character before.
Despite the high stakes, there are moments of humor as well. One standout scene involves Mindy and Beverly, her nurse, bonding over their fear of being fired after Mindy takes a phone call from Ben in the middle of an important surgery. Beverly, played by Beth Grant, brings her usual hilarity to the scene, making even the most tense moments feel a little lighter.
In the end, Mindy manages to rise to the occasion, putting aside her personal issues and making a tough call in a difficult situation. Her relationship with Ben continues to thrive, despite some bumps in the road earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Danny's storyline is left on a cliffhanger, hinting at even more drama to come in future episodes.
Overall, "Take My Ex Wife, Please" is a strong entry in The Mindy Project's fifth season. The show manages to balance humor and heart in a way that feels true to its characters, while still offering plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers engaged. Fans of the show will definitely want to tune in to see how this episode sets up the remaining episodes of the season.
