In The Secret Life Of The Zoo season 3 episode 10, titled Mouse Deer Move-out, viewers get a behind-the-scenes look at the Chester Zoo. This episode focuses on the struggles of the keepers as they prepare to transport a rare species of mouse deer out of the zoo. The mouse deer, native to Southeast Asia, are a critically endangered species and the zoo's last pair of mouse deer are being relocated to Newquay Zoo in Cornwall as part of a breeding program to help repopulate the species.
The keeper team has to carefully plan and execute the move to ensure the safety of the mouse deer and themselves. They carefully devise tactics to hide the mouse deer from the nervous surrounding animals. With mice deer being not very social animals transitioning from one zoo to another can be a huge challenge. Beginning with the familiarisation process and then adapting to their new surroundings it takes immense care of the keepers to make this a comfortable transition. Catching the mouse deer also proves to be a challenging task as they are naturally very skittish and easily scared.
In addition to the mouse deer move, we also get a glimpse of the two llamas named Rudi and Rio who are introduced to a new female llama named Coco. Coco's introduction to the llamas proves to be a challenge as Rudi and Rio initially reject her from their group. The male llamas are in the competitive phase of their lives and do not welcome new members easily. However, with strategic planning from keepers, Coco is eventually accepted into the group.
The episode also features a trio of adorable penguin chicks that have hatched in the zoo's penguin exhibit. The keeper team checks up on the chicks often to make sure they are healthy and developing properly. They also closely observe the penguin parents who effortlessly take care of their offspring. With the chicks being extremely delicate, the keepers need to take special care not to damage the fragile eggs during the nesting and hatching phases.
The Secret Life of The Zoo season 3 episode 10 also highlights the life of the zoo's resident giant otters. Here, we follow Ouassima the zoo's head otter keeper who is keeping a close eye on the new otter pups born four months ago. As with other mammals, giant otter pups need to learn from their mother to develop social skills like exploring their environment and swimming without interruptions. Through the episode, Ouassima continues to nurse the pups to deal with the stresses of growth and fights against infections that developed during infancy right up to when they go through with a successful surgery.
All in all the episode shows many challenges faced by the keepers in dealing with the animals in their care. The dedication, love, and care they put into every aspect of their jobs truly shines through and will have viewers reflecting on themes of endangered species, family, and hard work. With a number of rare animals at the Chester Zoo, this show also educates viewers on the importance of breeding and conservation programs which ultimately helps save endangered species from extinction and hones the skills of the zookeepers in providing the best possible care to their wards.
