As I stare at the steam rising from my bowl of noodles, I ponder the state of my love life - or lack thereof. It seems as though I've spent my entire time at university chasing after girls who are out of my league. But perhaps that's simply due to the circles I find myself in. That's why when I hear about the Movie Circle Misogi, a gathering of film buffs who watch and discuss obscure movies, I feel a glimmer of hope.
I arrive at the designated location and am surprised to discover that the circle comprises solely of men. Nonetheless, I'm excited to finally find a group of people with shared interests. We settle in to watch a black-and-white film from the '60s, and I try my best to follow along with the plot. However, it's apparent that these guys are on a different level of film knowledge than I am. They're able to analyze and deconstruct each scene and character in a way that I never could.
Feeling left out, I decide to invite the circle to my room for drinks. There, they reveal to me the true purpose of the Misogi - to achieve enlightenment through the act of watching 100 obscure films. They call it the "100 Blu-ray Special," and it's supposed to be a path to self-discovery and fulfillment. The idea fascinates me, and I can't help but feel drawn to it.
The next day, I find myself embarking on a wild goose chase for a movie that the Misogi members have been raving about. I scour various shops and movie theaters, to no avail. Just when I'm about to give up, I stumble upon an unlikely source that leads me to the film. I'm ecstatic to finally be able to watch it with the circle.
However, my happiness is short-lived as I quickly learn the harsh truth about the Misogi. It's not just about watching obscure films or achieving enlightenment - it's about exclusivity and pretentiousness. The members care more about their own egos than they do about actual appreciation for film. They belittle and ridicule those who don't conform to their narrow ideas of what constitutes "good cinema."
I'm disgusted by their behavior and am quick to distance myself from them. As I walk away, I realize that the pursuit of happiness and self-discovery cannot be found by blindly following a group or attempting to conform to certain standards. True fulfillment comes from living authentically and pursuing one's own unique passions and interests.
The Tatami Galaxy season 1 episode 2, "Movie Circle Misogi," explores the dangers of conformity and the pursuit of self-discovery. It illustrates the importance of being true to oneself and not allowing external forces to dictate one's path in life. Through its relatable and introspective protagonist, the show encourages viewers to embrace their individuality and to pursue what truly brings them joy and fulfillment.
