The Japanese sci-fi adventure animation series A Certain Scientific Railgun is about a group of female students studying in Academy City to become Espers, and maintain peace and order of the city. The group is comprised of Mikoto Misaka, an Esper that harnesses offensive electrical energy, Shirai Kuruko, the teleporter, Kaizari Uiharu, the group's hacker, and Ruiko Saten the allegedly powerless of them all. This 2008 animation series is actually a spin-off series to A Certain Magical Index, which are created by Kazuma Kamachi. Kazuma Kamachi is a Japanese light novel author who actively worked on the A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun media, and began writing novels during his junior high school years. A Certain Scientific Railgun begins with Kuruko apprehending a group of thugs who are harassing Misaka, then the two successfully thwart the group. After dealing with the thugs, a city-wide annual System Scan is conducted, to test every student's power levels, and unexpectedly, a bank robbery occurs nearby. The group make their move to the incident, with one of their members, Ruiko, rescued a young boy from the robbers, and then Kuruko and Misaka stop the robbers with their respective psychic abilities. Later in the series, they are now dealing with rogue psychics and with malevolent companies out to exploit everyone. This Japanese animation series is produced by J.C. Staff, and came up with 24 half-hour episodes, one Original Video Animation (OVA), and three DVD special episodes starting from 2009. This series won the Best Theme Song in 2010 Animation Kobe Awards by their first opening theme "Only My Railgun". In October 2010, this series is released in North America by Funimation Entertainment.
