ABC Family is a station best known for its dramas and comedies aimed at younger viewers. In 2013, the station began airing the reality show The Vineyard. Everything that appears on the show is unscripted and actually occurred to the people on the series, and every person on the show is a real person. Much of the action takes place in The Black Dog, which is a restaurant where the characters work, but some of the action occurs inside the rented house they share on Martha's Vineyard. Unlike other reality shows, which focus on just a few people, The Vineyard takes the time to introduce each person as they arrive to the house. Every person on the show has a different personality type. Viewers will meet the rich playboys who only work because their parents make them, the smart kids who hope to have a summer they'll never forget and the working class kids who never visited Martha's Vineyard before. Though none of the people on the show knew each other before filming began, they quickly formed connections and began relationships when the cameras rolled. The scenes shot at The Black Dog show the difficulties that the group have with working together and the problems that some of the wealthier employees have with seeing life from behind the kitchen doors. While The Vineyard could easily exist within the confines of the restaurant, it moves beyond the restaurant to show what life is like for the crew in the real world. These young kids, none of whom are over the age of 25, explore the world of Martha's Vineyard in front of the cameras. They head to the beach to play in the water and sunbathe, they take trips to local places near the Vineyard and they enjoy partying at local bars and restaurants. Though The Vineyard is a reality show, it bills itself as a docusoap because it combines elements of documentaries and soap operas. The end result is a show that highlights the beauty of Martha's Vineyard and the joys of being young and beautiful in the modern world.
